Institute Presentation
At the Sophia Children’s Hospital, ErasmusMC, a team on genital developmental disorders always has been a multidisciplinary one consisting of a pediatric endocrinologist, - urologist, - surgeon and a child psychologist. Furthermore, our team is part of a long standing working group Sexual Differentiation ErasmusMC, with specific interest in molecular mechanisms of androgen action and synthesis. The current focus of study is the long term medical, uro-surgical and psychosexual outcome of DSD patients. Moreover, supported by a ErasmusMC grant, detailed study is made of factors contributing to the development of germ cell tumors in DSD. These studies are performed in collaboration with University centers of Amsterdam (Free University) and Nijmegen and with the DSD group of the University of Ghent (Belgium; Dr M. Cools coordinator).
The participation in the Euro DSD project consists not only in contributing patient data and material but also in the initiation of a work package on DSD e.learning. The objective of the e.learning project is to set-up an e-learning web portal that will give entrance to an interactive learning environment for an up-to-date programme on DSD. It is the intention to have a large international group of authors and editors to include up-to-date information on normal development, patho-physiological mechanisms and current views on diagnostic and therapeutic interventions, psychological counselling and outcome. The EuroDSD e-learning webportal will offer within Europe and globally up-to-date and state of the art information exchange on DSD among consortium participants, medical students, residents, fellows etc.
