Institute Presentation

Karolinska Institutet (KI), founded in 1810, is the only Swedish university to focus exclusively on the field of medicine. It is the largest medical research centre in Sweden, and accounts for roughly 45% of the country’s university based medical research. 2200 postgraduate students and 2800 research staff (57% women) work in over 600 research units of KI. Research at KI has a strong European dimension, with >400 contracts within EU Framework Programmes. The Department of Woman and Child Health is one of KI´s 22 departments and incorporates all aspects of paediatrics, obstetrics and gynaecology, and hosts several translational basic science laboratories. The Paediatric Endocrinology Unit is a clinical and basic science unit affiliated with the university department and located at the Children’s Division of the Karolinska University Hospital at the Solna Campus (Astrid Lindgren Children’s Hospital) and the Huddinge Campus (Children´s Hospital).

The Pediatric Endocrinology Clinical Unit is the largest in Sweden and functions as a referral centre for disorders of sex development (DSD) covering a population of roughly 2,5 million people. The clinical and basic research staff has a long track record of clinical management and clinical and basic reseach in various areas of DSD including CAH, gonadal development and function, cryptorchidism and others. Translational research and clinical management of DSD are conducted in intimate collaboration with the clinical genetics and pediatric surgery departments at the university hospital. The involved research groups are funded by competitive research grants from EU, Swedish Research Council Swedish Research Council, Children´s Cancer Fund  Children´s Cancer Fund and other prestigious funding bodies.
