Institute Presentation

The Institute of Human Genetics of the Westfalian-Wilhelms University in Münster (Germany) consists of four departments:

  • clinical genetics including the unit for genetic counselling
  • molecular genetics
  • pre- and postnatal cytogenetics
  • tumor genetics

One of the main topics of research concerns genetics of reproductive medicine including disorders of sex development and genetic causes of premature ovarian failure as well as male infertility. Regarding disorders of sex development our research focuses on gonadal dysgenesis, androgen insensitivity and disorders of the pituitary-gonadal axis using cytogenetic, molecular cytogenetic and molecular genetic methods.
Further research topics concern genetics of development (craniosynostosis, polycystic kidney diseases), genetic causes of breast cancer, neurogenetics (genetic causes of mental retardation, prosopagnosia) and genetics of coagulopathies.
