The overall objective is to set-up an e-learning web portal that will give entrance to an interactive learning environment for an up to date program on DSD including normal development, patho-physiological mechanisms and current views on diagnostic and therapeutic interventions, psychological counselling and outcome. In the end we will be able to offer within Europe and globally up-to-date and state of the art information exchange on DSD among consortium participants, medical students, residents, fellows etc.
Previous experience has been gained with an interactive program: “Pediatric Endocrinology IN ter ACTION, Growth and Puberty” (ErasmusMC; 2004), presently available on the websites of Pediatric Endocrinology Societies of Europe (ESPE), USA (LWPES) and South America SLAP). It contains core modules aimed at medical students and advanced modules aimed at post-doc students, fellows etc.
At the start of WP06, a limited number of selected users will have access to the portal and be able to view the content.
In prior phases a basic functional and technical design has been developed as well as the implementation of a core portal foundation. The extension of the pre-existing CME functionalities will be carried out by technical staff of Pijlhove ICT and comprises of designing and developing the necessary functionalities in accordance with the complexity in the creation of content particular to this field with multiple (co-)authors, editors, reviewers working on any particular case at any one given time. This will enable multiple authors and editors to interact in the creation of the content. Pijlhove ICT will develop this cases administration process. Within the EuroDSD Consortium an e-learning working group has been formed, consisting of a group of medical editorial contributors . As author and/or editor they will be responsible for the content of the program. The main extension will consist of additional reviewing, reporting and content management tools to cater specific needs identified during a test phase.
Specifically for target groups beyond the medical student level ( i.e. post-doc, residents, fellows, etc), new content will be developed by the authors, thus enlarging the content with inclusion of advanced animations and interactive modules. In addition, medical educationalists will provide input on educational matters.
The technical staff of Pijlhove ICT will construct a Forum set-up. A Forum functionality will enable the users to post comments and remarks and discuss certain topics. The forum will be used for specific discussions on a case or study results or knowledge sharing. Several levels of accessibility are foreseen. Users will have the possibility to create a ‘private’ forum. This could be available to users with a certain status or role.
The information exchange is moderated by medical editorial contributors and WP specialist who will supervise the information flow and function as editor.
In close collaboration with the editorial contributors and WP specialists a Mediclopedia will be constructed, offering the user the possibility to search for specific subjects in an alphabetically ordered list with subjects. These subjects can contain ‘just’ a description or, for example a number of pages with animations, video etc. The mediclopedia will be a separate part of the portal. The mediclopedia may contain links to theory chapters or cases.
